Apple iPhone 14 release date, price, features, and news

Apple has just announced the iPhone 14-series at the company’s "Far Out" event on September 7, 2022. The latest iPhone generation consists of four phones, the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
New this year is the lack of a “mini” model in favor of a larger affordable iPhone, the iPhone 14 Plus. It shares hardware with the regular iPhone 14, but has a much larger 6.7-inch display, making it a more affordable version of the more expensive and premium iPhone 14 Pro Max.
Let’s explore the ins and outs of the iPhone 14-series!

Apple iPhone 14 Release date
The iPhone 14-series was announced at September 7, 2022, at Apple’s “Far Out” event, which took place earlier than usual (normally, Apple hosts its iPhone announcement events on the second Tuesday of September, which would have been September 13 this year).
Pre-orders for the iPhone 14 series will open in a couple of days’ time, on September 9. The iPhone 14 will be released to the market on September 16, 2022. Meanwhile, the iPhone 14 Plus will be available on October 7.
For reference, here are all iPhone releases since 2018, showing us how the latest iPhone 14 announcement and launch stack up in comparison. Below we have Apple's iPhone release schedule for reference, from 2018 onward, with the iPhone 14 and its expected release date included:

iPhone 14 Price
Despite the rumors for a price hike across the board, Apple kept the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus starting prices at $799 and $899, respectively, while the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max didn't score any price increases either, starting at $999 and $1099.
We can't wait for the awesome iPhone 14 deals to start pouring in!
Below are the full prices in comparison with last year's iPhone 13-series.

iPhone 14 Name
Apple has ditched the iPhone mini with the iPhone 14-series, in favor of an iPhone 14 Plus, which shares the same hardware as the regular iPhone 14, but employs a larger battery and display. The iPhone 14 Plus is essentially resurrecting the name that Apple gave to its first 5.5-inch iPhone all the way back in 2014.
Here's the full iPhone 14 lineup:
iPhone 14 6.1″ — the base iPhone, a logical continuation of the iPhone 11, 12, and 13
NEW! iPhone 14 Plus 6.7″ — a larger version of the iPhone 14 with dual cameras and bigger battery
iPhone 14 Pro 6.1″ — the triple-camera iPhone 14 with all the bells and whistles in a manageable size
iPhone 14 Pro Max 6.7″ — a largest version of the 14 Pro with premium features and longer battery life

iPhone 14 Camera
The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus don’t really have any big hardware changes, just marginal ones, but the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max have scored some neat camera improvements. For the full scope of the iPhone 14 camera improvements, check out our dedicated article right here.
Here’s the camera situation for the iPhone 14 series:
The big change here is the new 48MP Sony-made 1/1.3-inch camera sensor on the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, which will be using pixel-binning to achieve much better low-light camera sensitivity than before. The data from four camera sensor pixels will be used together to capture much more detail and less noise, at the expense of lower output image resolution.
The FaceTime camera on all models has scored faster aperture and auto-focusing.

iPhone 14 Design
The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus look mostly similar to the iPhone 13 in terms of overall design. However, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max look very different from their predecessors. With punch-hole cutouts, the full frontals of the two new “pro” phones look much more modern in comparison with the display notches of the older models. Aside from that, the now standard flat design that was kickstarted by the iPhone 12 generation has been kept alive and is unlikely to go anywhere in the near future.
What's more, Apple has embraced the new notch area. Instead of trying to hide it, it has built a whole new level of functionality around it. Called Dynamic Island, the new notch area has a trove of new functionality additions to iOS that will make use of the previously lacking upper top area of the iPhone. For example, the Dynamic Island extends
The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max colors are Space Black, Silver, Gold, and Deep Purple.
The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus are also similar to last year’s iPhone 13, as they employ the same general design, with diagonally-shaped camera islands at the rear and slim notches up front. Of course, the iPhone 14 Plus is first of its kind and is basically a super-sized version of the regular iPhone 14, with larger battery and display on board.
Colors-wise, we have Midnight (Black), Starlight (White), Blue, Red, and Purple for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus.

Apple iPhone 14 Display
The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max come with 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR OLED displays. Both displays are ProMotion ones and have 1-120Hz refresh rate, which is an improvement over last year’s iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, which had the "measly" 10-120Hz refresh rate displays.
Thanks to the new extended refresh rate, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max have scored an always-on display functionality, which lets your iPhone display certain lock-screen elements and widgets at all times and only refreshes once a second so as to save battery life. This functionality is similar to what you’d find on some of the latest Apple Watch smartwatches.
Meanwhile, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus also have the same 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays, but they are more standard 60Hz OLED ones with no always-on display functionality. There’s no punch holes here as well, with Apple still putting faith in the traditional notches.

Apple iPhone 14 Specs and hardware
The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus come with iPhone 13 Pro's chipset, the Apple A15 Bionic with 5-core GPU. This is the first time that a new iPhone generation ships with last year's Apple chipset. now has some 15% better performance in comparison with the iPhone 13.
Meanwhile, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max come with the Apple A16 Bionic chipset, its first 4nm chipset, with 16 billion transistors on deck. The six-core configuration has been kept, with Apple saying the two performance cores now use 20% less power than the Apple A15 Bionic. Graphics-wise, Apple says the GPU now has 50% more memory, which should improve the overall performance.
In terms of connectivity, the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Мax support 5G connectivity, just like the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 generations. eSIM is available on all new models, but a physical SIM card will not be available on any new iPhone 14 sold in the US. That's right, you will have to resort to an eSIM if you get any of the new iPhones in the US.
The iPhone 14 family now also supports Satellite SOS connectivity, allowing iPhone users to connect while in areas hat are outside regular cell coverage. With this new connectivity feature, the iPhone 14 will connect to a satellite hundreds of miles above and allow you to report emergency. Sadly, standard texting and other types of data throughput are not supported due to the limited bandwidth. Still, you can send simple short messages and hopefully get emergency services to help you out. You can also share your location via Find My.

Apple iPhone 14 Battery and charging
As is traditional for Apple, battery sizes aren't officially disclosed and information about the capacity in both mAh and Wh will become available at a later date. However, Apple gives an estimation of how long each phone would last you in a couple of different scenarios. For a full scoop on the iPhone 14 battery, check our dedicated article.
As you can see, it's a toss-up between the iPhone 14 Plus and the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The more affordable model has better audio playback endurance, but the premium iPhone 14 Pro Max has better video playback battery life. It will be very interesting to see how these two compare in terms of real-life usage.
The maximum wired charging is up to 27W for all four models, with up to 50% charge in around 30 minutes. MagSafe is present on all four new models as Apple is continuing to build up the MagSafe ecosystem. The wireless charging is capped up to 15W.
